Summary: HISTOLOGICAL ANALYSYS OF HAMSTRING TENDONS AFTER DECONTAMINATION
Abstract:
Introduction
Hamstring tendons are often used during many orthopedics surgeries. The risk of contamination is low but always present. Some solutions showed great results to decontaminate the tendons but the effect of these solutions in the grafts motivates research regarding cell viability.
Purpose
Evaluate cell viability from tendon grafts after decomtamination using chlorhexidine and povidone – iodine 10%.
Materials And Methods
Remaining part from grafts removed during 21 procedures from ACL reconstruction were cut and divided into 5 groups (105 samples). Group 1: was the control; Group 2 and 3 we used povidone iodine during 2 and 5 minutes respectively; Group 4 and 5 we used chlorhexidine during 2 and 5 minutes respectively. After that, the grafts were preserved and sent to the pathology service and paraffin blocks were made followed by histological sections. The pathologist used visual parameters present in the vascular phase, and cell apoptosis semiquantitatively. For statistical analysis we used the method of Kruskal-Wallis and Bonferroni test with p <0.01.
Results
We observed significant difference between the control and the groups submitted to solutions for 5 minutes (both solutions) when the comparison was made between control and groups of two minutes groups no significant difference in autolysis was found.
Conclusion
The use of aseptic solutions (chlorhexidine and povidone-iodine) for a period of two minutes showed no significant difference when compared with the control group regarding autolysis.
