Evaluation of Hip Extension Strength Following ACL Reconstruction with Different Types of Graft

Summary

Graft selection has no effect on hip extension strength following ACL reconstruction especially in whom wish to have powerful hip extension in their job or sport.

Abstract

Background

Hamstring tendons are secondary hip extensors, so hamstring tendons harvesting or use of other kinds of grafts for ACL reconstruction may have different effects on hip extension strength; which is important in sports that need high speed running( such as soccer) or full and powerful hip extension (such as climbing). Because of lack of a comprehensive study we have designed a study to evaluate hip extension strength following ACL reconstruction with different types of graft.
Material & Method: We have designed a prospective non-randomized case control study to compare isokinetic hip extension strength following ACL reconstruction using different types of graft ie. both gracilis and semitendinosus tendons (ST-G group), only semitendinosus tendon (ST group), bone-patellar tendon-bone graft (BPTB group) and allograft (ALO group). Hip extension strength was tested post-operatively at three and six month periods using a Biodex machine at speed of 30 degree per second in operated (cases) and non-operated (controls) limbs.

Results

In correlation of hip extension force of case and control groups there was significant increase between third and sixth month post-operative test results of all groups (p<0.05), however there was more increase in cases in comparison with controls. There was no significant difference in hip extension force between all four groups (both in case and control limbs) in the third and sixth month post-operative tests.

Conclusion

Graft selection has no effect on hip extension strength following ACL reconstruction especially in whom wish to have powerful hip extension in their job or sport.
