There were no specific advantages on rotator cuff trimming for decreasing shoulder pain after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.

Abstract

Introduction

Cause of shoulder pain after rotator cuff tear remains unknown, though there were numerous studies for this. The purpose of this study was to evaluate removal of rotator cuff tear site tissue has effect to decreased pain after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair compare with not trimmed operation.
We hypotheses that teared rotator cuff end tissue may have key of pain cascade, so removal of tear end tissues procedure may take good shoulder scoring and VAS of pain.

Methods

We prospectively trimmed rotator cuff end tissue from Sep. of 2011 and reviewed non-trimmed patients with minimum four-year follow-up.
Total patients number is one hundred seventy three, ninety two (Group 1) patients had rotator cuff tear end trimmed operation and eighty one (Group 2) patients had no-trimmed operation. American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, Constant score, VAS pain score and ROM was evaluated.

Results

Patients was evaluated post operation 6wks, 3months, 6months, 1year, 2 years and 4yrs.
There was no significant difference between two groups on ASES score, Constant score, VAS pain score (p=.196, p=.095, p=.155) at 4 years. Also, there was no significant difference in the increase of ROM.
