Lukas Willinger is an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon who graduated at the Medical University of Vienna. He was trained at the Department of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine of the TU Munich, where he has completed his MD degree by studying the “Healing properties of the human meniscus after surgical repair”.
In 2018, he joined the Biomechanics Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Imperial College London and spent one year as Sport Medicine Research Fellow. Currently, he is working at the Department of Trauma Surgery at the TU Munich.
Lukas specializes in biomechanics, orthopaedics, and joint preservation methods around the knee joint aiming for improving the understanding of knee ligament function and joint restoration. His work focuses on evaluating the soft-tissue structures and their importance to knee mechanics and kinematics to restore native biomechanics after ligament and meniscus injuries. His interdisciplinary approach to musculoskeletal research (in vivo, in vitro) combines the basic and clinical aspects of his work. Lukas’ work is highlighted by several research awards and grants (AGA Best Paper and AGA Best Poster Award, German Research Foundation Grant, AGA Research Grant) as well as numerous high impact publications. Lukas holds the certificate of higher education of Bavaria and is a reader at the TU Munich. He is an active member of the Association for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (AGA), German Knee Society (DKG), German Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (DVSE) and ESSKA.
