Abstract

Introduction

The purpose of this study was to analyze how well clinical trials on PRP interventions for osteochondral lesions of the talus adhered to the MIBO guidelines.

Methods

PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were used to perform a systematic review in the PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science databases. Inclusion criteria clinical studies that assessed PRP interventions for osteochondral lesions of the talus. The original 23 MIBO checklist items were separated and modified into a 44-point checklist. Adherence was determined by calculating the total percentage of checklist items that each article adequately and clearly reported from the 44-point checklist.

Results

A total of 10 studies (326 patients) with a weighted mean age was 61.8 ± 6.3 years were included in this study. The weighted mean follow-up was 34.2 ± 11.3 months. Overall, only 48.1% ± 9.8% of the 44-point MIBO checklist items were reported per article with no articles displaying adherence rates of 100%. No articles had adherence rates greater than 80%, 3 studies (20.0%) had adherence rates between 60.0% - 79.9%, 1 study had an adherence rate between 50.0-59.9% and 6 studies (60.0%) had an adherence rate below 50%. There was variation in adherence rates between categories with with "Intervention" having the highest adherence rate (100.0%) and "Activation" having the lowest (10.0%).

Discussion And Conclusion

This systematic review demonstrated that the mean adherence to MIBO guidelines for clinical studies regarding PRP interventions for osteochondral lesions of the talus was 48.1%. To increase the reproducibility, improve transparency, and assess the treatment efficacy of future PRP studies, reporting of MIBO guidelines should be improved.
