In general, please be vigilant whenever leaving a hotel. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded public areas, at large events, and when using public transportation (including taxis). Munich Travel Tips

Ground Transportation – Buses, Subways & Taxis

Munich has a highly developed and highly functional urban transport system run by the Munich Transportation Corporation (MVG) in close partnership with the Munich Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV). Tickets can be purchased at ticket machines at U-Bahn and S-Bahn stops, in busses and trams as well as online and via the MVV or MVG app. You may buy single tickets, group tickets and more. Two S-Bahn lines (S1 and S8) connect Munich with the International Airport (also known as the Franz Josef Strauss International Airport), about 30 kilometers away. It takes about 35 minutes to arrive from the airport to the city center, both lines depart alternately from the airport every 10 minutes.

The following means of transport take you to your desired destination in and around the Bavarian capital:

Buses

Scheduled bus services are operated in Munich's metropolitan area. Special night lines operate at night (marked with an "N" in front of the line number).

Tram

13 lines cover a route network of over 80 kilometers. The Munich tram network interconnects with the MVG's bus network, the Munich U-Bahn and the Munich S-Bahn. Special night lines operate at night (marked with an "N" in front of the line number)

U-Bahn

With Munich's subway you can reach about 100 stations in and around the city. The rail network of Munich's 8 U-Bahn lines is interconnected with the S-Bahn. Stations are marked with a capital "U" on blue background.

S-Bahn

8 lines travel through the city. The core route ("Stammstrecke") through the city center offers great flexibility when traveling in the city center with numerous trains. You can transfer from the Munich Airport to the city center with the S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 (see below). Stations are marked with a capital "S" on green background.

Taxis

Taxis are also available in Munich for travel within the city and to and from the airport. Taxis are generally pricier than public transportation but another good and reliable form of transportation. Here you can find general pricing information for taxis and 3 major taxi company’s numbers for any travel you would like to book ahead of time.

Climate

Germany’s climate is temperate and marine in the west and humid continental in the east. Summers are warm especially in the South. In June the average high temperature in Munich is 75°F/ 24°C and 58 °F/ 14°C. June has the highest rainfall in the summer months of Germany, bringing a light rain jacket and umbrella are recommended!

Electrical Outlets

Germany has two associated plug types; types C and F. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type F has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. Germany operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. This is the same socket as most European countries, but those outside the EU most likely will need a travel adapter. This is an easy find online or in stores to find an adapter for your plugs to EU, find by searching for a European adapter.

Currency

In Germany, the official currency is the Euro. You may exchange bills or withdraw and get change at the airport, please note all airports have an exchange rate that you will be charged. You may also do this at ATMs/ banks in Munich, but it is a good idea to have some Euros on you while leaving the airport for travel or emergency.
