Abstract

Purpose

TO COMPARE THE EFFICACY OF WET KNEE SIMULATOR MENISCAL REPAIR TRAINING WITH THAT OF CADAVERIC TRAINING FOR IMPROVEMENT OF ARTHROSCOPIC SKILLS OF JUNIOR ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEONS.

Materials And Methods

TOTAL OF 90 JUNIOR ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEONS ARE GROUPED INTO THREE GROUPS- CONTROL GROUP, WET SIMULATOR GROUP AND CADAVERIC GROUP. WITH 30 MEMBERS IN EACH GROUP. PRE-TRAINING ASSESSMENT OF THE ARTHROSCOPIC MENISCAL REPAIR SKILLS WERE PERFORMED FOLLOWED BY NO TRAINING FOR CONTROL GROUP, 4 HOURS EACH OF MENISCAL REPAIR TRAINING USING WET SIMULATOR AND CADAVERS FOR THE SECOND AND THIRD GROUPS RESPECTIVELY. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY POST TRAINING ASSESSMENT OF SKILLS OF ALL THREE GROUPS. THE PRE AND POST TRAINING PERFORMANCE WERE SCORED USING ASSET SCORE. THE MEAN IMPROVEMENT OF ASSET SCORE WAS COMPARED BETWEEN THE THREE GROUPS.

Conclusion

THERE WAS IMPROVEMENT OF MENISCAL REPAIR SKILLS POST TRAINING IN BOTH WET SIMULATOR AS WELL AS CADAVERIC TRAINING GROUPS, COMPARED TO CONTROLS. THE IMPROVEMENT OF WET SIMULATOR GROUP WAS LITTLE LESS BUT COMPARABLE TO THAT OF CADAVERIC TRIANING GROUP. THE WET SIMULATOR CAN BE DEVELOPED AS A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO CADAVERIC TRAINING CONSIDERING THE EASE OF PROCUREMENT OF THE KNEE MODELS. ADDITIONAL STUDY OF THIS POSSIBILITY IS WARRANTED
