Gary G. Poehling, MD

Dr. Poehling has over 48 years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon. He pioneered the use of arthroscopy and was influential in defining various procedures that can be performed arthroscopically. With James Roth, MD, and Terry Whipple, MD, Dr. Poehling pioneered wrist arthroscopy in 1985. Dr. Poehling also was one of the first orthopedic surgeons to use arthroscopic operative techniques in the elbow. Dr. Poehling has also been a proponent of developing and using minimally invasive surgical techniques. As an academic surgeon, he has promoted the application of robotic surgery and cellular therapy while working at the Regenerative Medicine Institute. He has championed the importance of orthopedic outcome studies and evidence-based medicine. Dr Poehling served as Chair of Orthopedics at Wake Forest for 18 years and Editor in Chief for the Journal of Arthroscopy for 24 years.
