The ISAKOS Knee Sports Preservation Committee’s video book, or vBook, is a modern interpretation of the classic textbook in video format. It reimagines the fixed analogue format of a printed book into a dynamic digital format of multiple video “chapters” that the viewer can watch or listen to in whatever order they wish, whenever and wherever it is convenient for them, and that can be easily updated as the latest understanding of the topic evolves.

“Osteotomy Around the Knee” consists of 27 different chapters, where experts worldwide take a deep dive into the various aspects of the topic and present a video presentation exploring and explaining that particular component. Like a traditional textbook, each author’s chapter has been peer-reviewed and edited before inclusion in the final product. Unlike a traditional printed textbook, this format allows for easy ongoing adjustment, addition, subtraction, and evolution as the science of osteotomy continues to inevitably preogress. It creates a “living textbook” in video format where the information can be kept current, rather than the static format of the printed textbook, where any update requires a reprint of the entire book.

The video format also allows for easy consumption of the information in a format that surgeons want—video. This allows the audience to consume the book when and where they like. It can be watched on a computer or a phone, listened to in the car or on a train, and navigated from one chapter to the next or through a chapter, as easily as watching a Netflix documentary.

This project aimed to create an up-to-date video textbook covering all the details of osteotomy around the knee and present it in a format that is easy to consume, easy to navigate, and can be kept up to date via incremental edits whenever new information comes to hand.
