Types of Educational Opportunities:
Research projects, research facilities and resources, cadaver labs, publication opportunities, integration of the patient and public involvement, and the role of the fellow: Over the last three years, the faculty of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Program at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital and Humanitas University has been actively involved in clinical and translational research across several areas of musculoskeletal medicine and surgery. Major research activities have included: Hip and knee arthroplasty, with particular focus on primary and revision total joint replacement, clinical and radiographic outcomes, implant positioning, management of complex cases, and patient-reported outcome measures. Recent work has addressed topics such as leg-length discrepancy following total hip arthroplasty and functional recovery after hip replacement. Revision arthroplasty and periprosthetic joint infection, including the identification of predictive markers of infection in apparently aseptic revision procedures, two-stage revision strategies, spacer techniques, and optimization of the diagnostic and therapeutic pathway for failed joint replacements. Computer-assisted and robotic orthopaedic surgery, particularly in hip and knee reconstruction, with research focusing on surgical accuracy, implant alignment, reproducibility, personalized surgical planning, and clinical outcomes. Joint preservation and cartilage regeneration, including biological and surgical approaches to focal cartilage and osteochondral defects, scaffold-based treatments, cell-based and acellular therapies, and novel osteochondral implants. Sports medicine and knee preservation, with investigations into cartilage injuries, return to sport, treatment of active patients, patellofemoral disorders, and imaging-based assessment of early and established osteoarthritis. Hip preservation surgery, including femoroacetabular impingement, hip arthroscopy, labral pathology, and the management of patients presenting with different stages of hip osteoarthritis. Innovative implant technologies and bearing surfaces, including research on dual-mobility constructs and strategies aimed at improving implant stability, longevity, and outcomes following primary and revision arthroplasty. Musculoskeletal rehabilitation and functional outcome assessment, including objective evaluation of gait, mobility and functional recovery following major orthopaedic procedures, in collaboration with rehabilitation and physiotherapy research units. These research activities are supported by multidisciplinary collaboration between orthopaedic surgeons, researchers, rehabilitation specialists, radiologists, biomedical scientists and Humanitas University faculty. The overall research program is strongly oriented toward clinical translation, technological innovation, personalized joint reconstruction, joint preservation, and improvement of patient-reported and functional outcomes.
