Summary: Recognizing the high incidence of DVT after OWHTO, careful perioperative management was considered necessary.

Purpose

There are some reports on the incidence of DVT after medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO), but its prevention and treatment are controversial. Therefore, we aimed to examine the incidence of DVT in the early postoperative period of OWHTO performed at our hospital.
(Subjects and Methods) The subjects were 48 patients (50 knees) who underwent OWHTO at our institution, with an average age of 59.5 years and an average BMI of 25.6 kg/m2. No prophylactic anticoagulant was applied, and DVT examination with lower limb vein echogram was performed on average 3.9 days after surgery.

Results

DVT was observed in 23 cases (47.9%). All cases were asymptomatic distal DVT with 20 cases (41.6%) on the affected side, 3 cases (6.3%) on both sides, and no occurrence on the healthy side. There was no significant difference between the DVT group and the non-DVT group including 6 months clinical results.

Discussion

Similar to the reports of various research, it was considered necessary to manage the perioperative period, recognizing that the incidence of DVT after OWHTO is high.
