The Knee Complex Surgery Fellowship, is a program that provides learning and training in the most frequent pathologies of the knee. The selected candidate will receive clinical and surgical tools and skills, guided by expert surgeons. The fellow will gain experience in the management of ligament reconstruction surgery, meniscal transplants, joint replacement surgery, joint preservation procedures, and experience in sports medicine injures in professional soccer players and olympics athletes. We have a cadaveric lab, for the practice of surgical techniques and for the development of research and innovation, in an academic and cordial environment.

Recent activity of Teaching Center: Recent activities include participation in the Junior Pan American Games, with planned involvement in the next Pan American Games in Lima and other events organized by the Chilean Olympic Committee. The Center also conducts cadaveric knee surgery courses, subspecialty meetings, and ongoing clinical research in sports medicine, ligament reconstruction, meniscal preservation, return to sport, and knee arthroplasty.

Role of the fellow with respect to Clinical, Surgical, Research, and other opportunities: The fellow will be fully integrated into the clinical, surgical, academic, and research activities of the Teaching Center. Clinical responsibilities include outpatient evaluation, imaging review, treatment planning, postoperative follow-up, rehabilitation, and return-to-sport assessment. Surgical participation includes arthroscopy, ligament and multiligament reconstruction, meniscal preservation, osteotomies, robotic knee arthroplasty, and complex knee procedures, with progressive responsibility according to experience and patient safety. The fellow will participate in ongoing research, data collection, scientific analysis, presentations, and manuscript preparation. Additional opportunities include cadaveric training, specialty courses, academic meetings, Team Chile athlete care, national rugby support, and selected events organized by the Chilean Olympic Committee.

Research projects, research facilities and resources, cadaver labs, publication opportunities, integration of the patient and public involvement, and the role of the fellow: The fellow will participate in ongoing research on multiligament knee injuries, ACL revision, medial and posterolateral instability, return-to-sport assessment, meniscal preservation, robotic knee arthroplasty, and AI-based clinical prediction tools. Dedicated cadaver laboratory training is a key component, allowing hands-on practice of advanced ligament reconstruction, meniscal procedures, osteotomies, and complex surgical approaches. The fellow will also contribute to data collection, analysis, presentations, and manuscript preparation.
Related Conference/Lecture Schedule: Approximately 5–7 courses and major academic activities are offered annually: two cadaveric knee surgery courses, a robotic knee arthroplasty course, an osteotomy course, an annual subspecialty meeting with focused lectures, participation in the SLARD Congress, and additional courses or visiting-professor activities as organized
Athletic Team Coverage: Our institution is the official medical center for Team Chile, providing care to elite athletes affiliated with the Chilean Olympic Committee. The fellow may participate in athlete evaluation, injury management, surgical decision-making, rehabilitation, and return-to-sport planning. According to clinical and event needs, the fellow may also support the Chilean national rugby program and provide medical coverage during Olympic Committee events held that year, including Pan American, South American, or other international competitions.

Financial Support and Expenses

Types of Financial Support Available: A stipend is provided, Monthly Stipend of 2500 usd
Other support that the Teaching Center can provide: The Teaching Center can provide administrative and institutional support, access to scientific databases, research and statistical guidance, and integration into clinical, surgical, cadaveric, and simulation activities. The Center may also cover registration fees for selected congresses and courses related to the fellowship, subject to prior approval and institutional availability.
Estimate of Living Expenses (Housing and other major costs): Estimated living expenses in Santiago are approximately USD 1,500–2,000 per month. This includes USD 700–1,000 for furnished accommodation and USD 800–1,000 for food, utilities, transportation, health insurance, and personal expenses. Costs may vary according to location and lifestyle.
