ICATKNEE is the Knee and Arthroscopy Unit of the Catalan Institute of Traumatology and Sports Medicine (ICATME) a renowned sports trauma center in Spain. The department is part of Hospital Universitari Dexeus, a private medical institution linked to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and credited to form specialists in Orthopedic Surgery by the National Health System (Spanish Ministry of Science and Education). More than half of our patients are amateur or professional sportsmen/women. Knee. We perform all kind of sport-related and orthopedic reconstructive as well as arthroscopic surgery, mainly ligament reconstructions (some 300/year), cartilage and meniscal surgery. We perform weekly ACL reconstructions, around the knee osteotomies, cartilage microfractures, mosaicplasties, and massive fresh osteochondral allografts. Meniscal surgery is one of our main objectives, that includes meniscal repair and meniscal substitution, either allografts (with a cumulated experience of more than 250 in the last 20 years), and implants (some150). We also perform PCL reconstruction and complex (multi-ligamentary) knee reconstruction (some 30 cases per year). The Patellofemoral joint, including instabilities and degenerative conditions are also treated and currently investigated. A new surgical method for PF dislocation (quasi-anatomic MPFL Reconstruction) has been developed over years. Less freqüent procedures: As we currently deal with soccer players, ankle arthroscopy is also performed quite often. That includes anterior and posterior ankle impingement, talus osteochondral injuries and ankle instability. Reconstructive surgery. TKR, Unicompartimental prosthesis and patellofemoral prosthesis (some 100 per year) are also common practice in our department. Treatment of Muscular and Tendon injuries are also a focus of interest in our common practice. Research. Complete arthroscopic equipment is permanently set at the department of Anatomy of the School of Medicine (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona-Campus de Bellatera), under the coordination of Pablo Gelber MD. In this department we are constantly conducting some research including development of new surgical techniques. On the other hand, our fellows are able to practice in cadaver specimens to improve their surgical skills.
