Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, MD, PhD, is an internationally recognized orthopaedic surgeon specializing exclusively in knee sports surgery and ligament reconstruction. He practices at the Centre Orthopédique Santy in Lyon, France, a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, where he performs more than 600 ACL reconstructions annually. After completing his orthopaedic training at Hôpital La Pitié-Salpêtrière in Paris under Professor Gérard Saillant, he pursued further specialization in sports knee surgery before joining the Centre Orthopédique Santy in 2003. In 2022, he obtained a PhD for his research on the neurological consequences of ACL injury using functional brain MRI. Dr Sonnery-Cottet is the founder of the SANTI Study Group (Scientific Anterior Cruciate Ligament Network International), an international collaborative network dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of sports-related knee injuries. He has trained more than 100 international fellows and has authored >300 PubMed-indexed publications, including more than 200 dedicated to the ACL, as well as 40 book chapters and more than 500 scientific presentations worldwide. He served as President of the Société Francophone d’Arthroscopie (SFA) in 2024–2025 and is an active member of major international societies including ESSKA, ISAKOS, AOSSM, the ACL Study Group and the Herodicus Society. His scientific work has received numerous international distinctions, including the AANA Richard J. O’Connor Research Award in 2017 and 2025, the AOSSM David Sisk Award, the VJSM Blockbuster Award, the On Foundation/AOSSM Research Award, and multiple VJSM Best Video Awards. His 2025 Richard J. O’Connor Award recognized the five-year randomized clinical trial demonstrating superior outcomes of combined ACL and anterolateral ligament reconstruction compared with isolated ACL reconstruction. Through his clinical activity, international teaching and extensive research on ACL reconstruction, anterolateral procedures and arthrogenic muscle inhibition, Dr Sonnery-Cottet is regarded as one of the leading international specialists in knee ligament and sports surgery.
