Purpose

:To examine whether hip arthroscopy is beneficial for elite athletes.

Methods

All athletes didn’t report injury or event which resulted in the presence of the hip symptoms, failed to be treated with at least 3 month-conservative therapy with medication and physiotherapy and agreed to undergo hip arthroscopy. Pain score (1-10) as reported by the patients and imaging evaluation with radiograph ( anteroposterior pelvic, cross table and false profile view of the affected hip) and MRI arthrography and Modified Harris Hip Score were used pre-operatively. None of them had Hip dysplasia. The final diagnosis though was set intra-operatively (labral detachment, FAI, cartilage defects). All of the athletes followed individualized rehabilitation program by a skillfull physiotherapist and Pain Score and Modified Harris Hip Score were also noted post-operatively.

Results

:35 elite athletes (23 male, 12 female ) with mean age 29 years participated in this retrospective study from February 2003 to March 2018. MHHS prior surgery was a mean 69 (1w) and increased to 92 after surgery (12w). 29/35 athletes were pain free and returned to a satisfactory level they were pre-operatively in 12 weeks, in 3 /35 iliopsoas tendinitis occurred and after conservative treatment returned to full activity in 15-18 weeks and 3/35 patients developed heterotopic ossification but continued participating in sports without disability problems. No one was re-operated.

Conclusion

Hip arthroscopy can help the elite athletes to deal with specific Hip problems and improve their pain symptoms and return back to their sport level when an extensive prior conservative treatment was failed. It is a minimal procedure which increases the ability for solving the Hip problems in the sport population and extends their career.
